FROM MEDAN, INDONESIA TO MANILA, PHILIPPINES: DENZELL THEJA’S ONE-WEEK BASKETBALL DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY 🇮🇩🇵🇭

Beyond One Week of Basketball: Denzell Theja’s Journey from Indonesia to the Philippines 🇮🇩🇵🇭

At 14 years old, Denzell Theja traveled from Medan, Indonesia, to Manila, Philippines not just to train basketball but to learn, experience a different level of competition and discover what it takes to become a better player.

Every young basketball player has a dream. Some dream of playing professionally, others of representing their school or country. But behind every dream is a journey of learning, sacrifice, and continuous development.

For 14-year-old Denzell Theja from Medan, Indonesia, that journey recently brought him to the Philippines for a one-week personalized basketball training experience with Coach Rob Labagala and Passion Sports Academy.

It was more than a basketball training trip. It was an opportunity to step outside his comfort zone, experience a different basketball culture, and understand the level of commitment required to improve his game.

Why the Philippines?

Basketball is deeply rooted in Filipino culture. From grassroots programs to high school, collegiate, and professional leagues, the Philippines offers young athletes opportunities to experience different levels of competition.

For Denzell’s father, bringing his son to Manila was an intentional decision to expose him to a different basketball environment.

“As a father, I want to give Denzell the opportunity to grow not only as a basketball player but also as a person. I believe that exposing him to a different basketball environment, especially in the Philippines where basketball is a big part of the culture, would help him understand the level he needs to reach.”

He chose Passion Sports Academy because of its approach to complete player development, combining skills training, athletic preparation, team experience, and competitive exposure.

But beyond the training itself, he wanted something equally important: an honest assessment of where Denzell currently stands and what he needs to improve.

One Week. Different Experiences. Valuable Lessons.

Under the guidance of Coach Rob Labagala, a former PBA player and Philippine Youth National Team coach, Denzell participated in a personalized program designed to provide a complete basketball development experience.

His one-week program included:

● Individual Skills Training: Shooting, ball handling, footwork, finishing, and game-based decision-making.
● Strength & Conditioning: Athletic development, physical preparation, and body control.

● Team Practices: Exposure to the environment and intensity of Philippine high school basketball.

● Tune-Up Game: Applying his skills and learning in competitive situations.

● UAAP Basketball Exposure: Watching live high school and collegiate basketball games to observe the pace, physicality, teamwork, and decision-making of players competing at higher levels.

● Game Viewing and Basketball Learning: Developing a better understanding of team concepts and the game beyond individual skills.

Each experience had a purpose.

Individual training helped Denzell work on his fundamentals. Team practices challenged him to adjust to different players and systems. Competitive games gave him an opportunity to experience the demands of playing against unfamiliar opponents.

Watching UAAP games also allowed him to see firsthand how players prepare, compete, and execute at higher levels.

At Passion Sports Academy, we believe that development is not simply about the number of training sessions completed. It is about the quality of learning and the player’s ability to apply those lessons moving forward.

A Father’s Perspective: Understanding the Gap

One of the most meaningful parts of Denzell’s experience was the realization that basketball development requires more than talent and hard work. It also requires awareness of where you stand and where you want to go.

According to his father:

“It was a very valuable learning experience for Denzell. One of the biggest takeaways was seeing the gap between his current level and the level of players he was exposed to in the Philippines.”

For a young athlete, understanding that gap can be an important turning point.

Sometimes, the greatest value of training in a different environment is not immediately becoming better. It is discovering how much more there is to learn.

Denzell’s father also appreciated the variety of experiences offered throughout the program.

“I appreciated how the program offered different learning environments, from individual skill work to team practices and competitive games. It allowed him to experience basketball from different perspectives.”

He also highlighted the importance of Coach Rob’s approach to workload, recovery, and long-term development.

For him, the priority was not completing as many sessions as possible in one week, but making sure every experience provided meaningful lessons.

The Biggest Improvement Was His Mindset

After returning to Indonesia, Denzell’s father noticed something that may be more valuable than any immediate improvement in basketball skills.

A change in awareness, attitude, and motivation.

“I would say the biggest change was in his awareness and mindset. Denzell realized that there is still a significant gap between where he is now and where he wants to be. Although he still has a lot of work to do, he came home wanting to practice more independently and work harder to catch up.”

That realization reflects what Passion Sports Academy believes about long-term player development.

A week of training cannot completely transform a basketball player. However, the right training environment, meaningful competition, and honest feedback can influence how a young athlete approaches the game.

A player who understands his weaknesses has a clearer direction for improvement.

A player who experiences a higher level of competition develops a better understanding of what is required.

And a player who becomes motivated to work independently has taken an important step toward becoming responsible for his own development.

A Message to Other Basketball Parents

For parents considering sending their children abroad for basketball training, Denzell’s father shared a valuable perspective:

“I don’t expect one week of training to transform a player overnight. What matters is that he now has a clearer understanding of the level required and the work he needs to put in.”

He also emphasized an important lesson about international training experiences:

“The trip itself is not the finish line. What matters most is how the player applies what he has learned and continues working after returning home.”

These words perfectly capture the purpose of Passion Sports Academy’s player development philosophy.

Basketball growth does not happen in one practice, one tournament, or one training camp. It happens through consistent effort, discipline, learning, and the willingness to improve every day.

For Denzell, the real challenge now begins back home in Medan, Indonesia, where he can continue applying what he learned during his time in Manila.

His father concluded his feedback with a heartfelt message:

“Thank you again, bro Rob, and the entire Passion Sports team for the opportunity and for taking care of Denzell during his time in Manila. We truly appreciate it!”

To Denzell and his family, thank you for trusting Coach Rob and Passion Sports Academy.

We hope this experience becomes another meaningful chapter in your basketball journey.

Keep working. Keep learning. Keep enjoying the game, Denzell!
